Pollinator Bats and SARS-2/Covid-19

Greetings, guys, gals, and non-binary pals!

In the last few months, there has understandably been confusion and fear at almost every turn. Uncertainty and anxiety seem to go hand in hand right now, strolling down the often deserted streets. As many communities exist in lock-down, attempting to fight the spread of the virus currently bringing the world’s population to its knees, some have attempted to go after the perceived source.

It has been suggested that bats may be and often are carriers for coronaviruses, among others. It is known from studies and observations the world over that when humans move into wild spaces, invading habitat lands, animals venture into human-populated areas. That’s what they do. They may be more cautious, but all too often habitat separation and depleted resources necessitate animals being in newly-designated “human spaces.” It is no different with bats.

Bat species the world over are notorious for being disease vectors. Due to their unique physiology, they have developed particularly high responses to bacterial and viral threats. In some cases, these threats can jump the species barrier, crossing to other animals, including humans. This threat is exponentially higher when humans are in repeated contact with these animals in their habitats. They don’t go out of their way to make anyone sick, hurt livestock, or cause problems. Any issues between the wildlife and human inhabitants of a region can almost invariably be traced back to the humans being in spaces that aren’t theirs.

Reports have come out of Brazil that locals have attacked and attempted to eradicate the gentle night flyers, in a panicked attempt to stop the virus’ spread. Not only is this dangerous and ineffective, but bats are one of the world’s most prolific pollinators. While we’re in the middle of a pandemic, food crops are more essential than ever, nutrition playing a significant role in a person’s baseline immunity. Many of these crops are pollinated by bats, among others.

While there have been campaigns to minimize the impact of the pandemic, it is still very much an issue and in play. I tend to try and cover lighter topics, but this is very much first and foremost in my mind right now: Please, if you are legally able to vote in the 2020 election, do so. I realize I have a rather small reach, but we need everyone to participate this time. There were precautions in place in the event of a pandemic that were disbanded over a year ago. We need change and we need it now. Remember to wear your masks and keep social distancing, friends.

As to bats, pumpkins, and other seasonal components, new posts will be coming shortly, visiting those facets. Till then, I hope you and yours are well, safe, and happy.

Till next time, friends.
